reasons
1. Polarising filters help reduce the glare especially when taking photos that have a large amount of water / sea/ ocean etc they give a very crisp clear image by only allowing light that reflects from the subject to enter the lens!
2. possibly the best reason to buy and install a poarising filter - it gives you protection from accidentally scratching the lens - worst case if you get a scratch is throw it away and buy another (polarising filter) heaps cheaper than buying a new lens!!!

Yes,when I first bought my Canon SLR,I also got a Polarising filter.
Because i do alot of surfing,ocean pix & they do seem to make the better pix than without filter.
also salt that ends up on your lens,scratchs when cleaning(if not done properly)but if it does scratch,as you said,its cheaper to by a new filter instead of a len.
