Question, if you buy a forby in NSW and the car comes with REGO and RWC does the RWC still stand when i get the plates changed to Vic or do i have to get another RWC? cheers

Hi Marky,

I'm not an expect, but I think you might need a Vic RWC. RTA should be able to advise.

Cheers

Last I looked into it was with a dirt bike, presume the same with car. As long as the rego was current I didn't need a roady for Vic. It was reg in my name in Qld already though, dunno if that changes anything.
As Knackers said, give Vic roads a call to be sure, to be sure.

you have to take the car to a vicroads office for inspection they will then give you vic plates and you can then cash in the unused nsw rego (i think vic roads take the nsw plates)
not sure on the rwc though will ask my mate who is going through the same thing at present, but i think he said a vic rwc will be required for vic roads as there is different standards.
VICroads is your best bet expect to wait 30 minutes on the phone though

you will need a vic RWC for new reg. Different rules in all states when it comes to registration, good luck.

A friend of mine bought a truck in NSW and took it to SA where he first registered it. because it was not registered in his name in NSW it had to go over for an inspection. If he registered it in NSW in his name then changed the address when he got back to SA it would have not had to go for an inspection.

Check this out before you buy.

Not that the inspections are a bad thing but just an inconvenience and extra expense that we shouldn't have to pay for.

There is no "transfer" of rego between states as each state has their own independant registration authority.
From NSW to VIC you can legaly drive for up to 3 months before you have to re-register the car.
As Bec said you can cash in the NSW rego (pro rata) this would help to pay for the Vic Rego though make sure you get and keep a reciept when you hand the plates in as they go missing from time to time an it will be the only way to prove that you have surrendered them.
As it is a "new" registration you will be required to get a VIC roadworthy cert and pay for a full 12 months rego.

Personally I would just keep it registered in the State you brought it in especially if there is substantial rego left. When it runs out then do the change over...
