I will only be using the winch occasionaly maybe once or twice a month. I am only new at 4 wheel driving so therefor want by trying anything i am not cumfortable with anyways but will also have other guys with me.

Just wondering what best winch would be and peoples thoughts. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karl,
i have had the 9000lb premier winch installed for about 12 mths now and i cannot fault them .most people will have there own opinion on which is best .
it also comes down to how much you are willing to pay.
the premier winch won the test in 4x4 action done in issue 126.but the tiger winch was not in the test.
cheers

Keep well clear of the Warn 9.5 XP winches there nothing but trouble (you could google it if you dont believe me) for the price...Someone else on this forum has the same view...

I'd look at the Premier and then the Tigerz

I have the 9000LB tigarz winch & it has never let me down (touch wood) & it had been used many times some of which have been submerged whilst in use, I don't know about the Premier but I know I can trust mine to get me out of trouble

Had a warn years ago, was great. Heard many good things about the Tigerz, and value for money
would be hard to beat. The Premier is the one I would buy if I had the money though. Lots of coin, but
also a great winch from all accounts, and is 'rated' for lifting- that's gold to me!

G'day Karl

As stated the Premier was the clear winner then I'ld look at theWarn XD 9000 for quality. With the Tigerz, some are good, some are very unreliable. I know many people who have given up on them & got a Warn.

But what ever winch you get you must run it regularly & service it every 12 months or so to keep it in good working order. My winch once rusted & seized due to lack of use. Now I always
1: Respool the cable neatly in my driveway every 2 to 3 weeks. This keeps all the gears in it turning & coated in grease

2: When you get home after using it on a trip, winde the cable or rope out clean it, then winde it back in. check the condition of the cable/rope.

3: Every 12 months ( January ) I have my winch stripped, cleaned & repacked with new clean grease. So it's ALWAYS READY when I realy need it, & it will NEVER rust out.

You service your engine, service your winch also by changing the grease, seals & gaskets in it every 12 to 18 months. Look after it & it will look after you.

Cheers
Mal

Default Thanks

Thank you everyone for your opinion. I think for the time being money wise i will have to go for the Tigers but in the future might have to upgrade to the premier. Will let you now how thing go.

Thanks Mongrel Lux i defiantly will take your advice on board i was planning on looking after servicing it regularly. However never thought about running it out and in again every couple of weeks to keep everything lubed up.

Thanks again everybody.

Hiya Mal,I did all that and as you can see when away it failed again but was working 6 weeks prior and no 4wd in that time...In the video you can hear scott say gee when was it last unwound because of the strength you needed to pull it out under free-spool..Its been my first winch and it was that hard from day one,so i did not know any different...

Hopefully i will see a rep from Warn at the show to find a solution..

G'day Karl,

Another brand to look at is the Avenger Mako (Kingone - imported by Avenger) winches.

They are manufactured by Kingone in China who manufacture winches from lil ATV ones to very large industrial winches, electric, hydraulic and pto...

Kingone designed the entire Premier winch then they took it elsewhere to be made (Still in China IIRC)

Observing them, IMO they are identical... and i mean identical down to the stickers, wiring, fairlead, motor, drum, housing, control lead, cable, hook and even the 'free' snatch block. The only difference is the gear box cover. Honestly i wouldnt be surprised to hear they are made by Kingone, would make more sense.

I originally wanted the Premier but was after one in 12,000lb but found they were not available at the time (not sure if they are now?) because they were using the same body as the 9,000lb and it was cracking where as the Kingone 12,000lb is a completely scaled up version.

I picked my 12,000lb winch up for around $1000-1100ish?

.......................

Bottom line as Lux said, it doesnt matter what winch you buy, if you stick it on then go 12months between using there is a very good chance it will not work when you need it regardless of the brand. If you think you might need to use it once or twice a year then a hand winch would suit you better.

Also if you dont really plan on using it every weekend then id strongly suggest you stick with a steel cable over rope. Steel cable + run it once a month even if just re-spooling it nice and tight should ensure you have a reliable winch that will work when you need it most.

Travis.
