There are small touch screen that can mount to the roof and you run the computer under a seat. The comouter is small 8x8x2.4 inches on memory which runs 12v DC. A friend in USA has one but it costs rough $1000 AUS and then you need the GPS receiver. The only thing I dislike is the hard drive, would prefer a solid state drive. In his car, it runs Windows XP and besides GPS, he has 80GB of MP3 and ability to down load photos or video to the remaining drive. The ones I have seen in Oz are in-dash mount and can't run OziExplorer, there is one I think it is VMS from Melbourne had protential.

I've seen the auto PC units at the 4WD and caravan and camping shows. For a while they seemed good, but now that you can get a notebok PC with 120GB drive running a 1.6GH Atom processor and XP for around $600, these units have become pretty much redundant, especially at their asking price (up to $1500-2000). Plus they don't have the basic versatility of a notebook.

Cheers

Personally I like the Asus EeePC (or simular mini laptops) which has no spinning or moving parts to fail. They are down around $500 and if you needed large storage, a 300GB external USB hard drive for $100. Has a small footprint on the dash and lite

I should have said netbook, but many people don't know what this means, so I called it notebook. All of the netbooks offer the option of an SSD, but notebook hard drives are designed for more rugged use and are far less likely to fail because of vibration and shock. An external drive just adds to the complexity, clutter and power requirements, especially if the USB ports aren't powered. And loose objects, like a hard drive, on a dash isn't a good thing.

For those that don't know what's about, here's a good place to start:

Notebooks from SONY, ASUS, FUJITSU, HP and TOSHIBA - Organiser World

and:

Ultra Mobile PC Solutions - Organiser World

Cheers

Ray

Looked at the hema one and was not overlly impressed with its features for the price.

Love the TOM GO70 for the road and use a 7 inch Polaris for the topi maps.

Hi all!

I have a MIO C520, currently in the process of unlocking her for other maps.

Must say, cheap as chips when compared to the HEMA, and apparently the HEMA is a re-badged C520 anyways?

The MIO works a treat around the city, is easy to use, and is user freindly!

Food for thought for those considering a HEMA.
