To answer my own question and to hopefully assist those who have also been having problems loading Shonky maps onto their Garmin Nuvi (I use a Garmin Nuvi 255W):
Firstly Thanks for all the reponses.
Thanks especially to V8 4runner for pointing me in the right direction. You are correct in stating the answers could be found there.
Heres what I've done to load Shonky maps onto my Garmin Nuvi 255w.
Firstly, there are two versions of Shonky maps,
- A PC version for use with Mapsource etc , and
- A Data Card version (in my case an SD card)
1. I downloaded the
Datacard version from the site recommended by V8 4runner (I happen to be a member of that site anyway) onto my PC. It took 4 attempts to get the full 413 MB (434,061,312 bytes) downloaded successfully but thats just the way it goes. it may work first up with you. The file is named "
gmapsupp.img".
2. On a new/empty 2GB SD card I created a directory called "Garmin"
3. I copied the downloaded file "
gmapsupp.img" from the PC onto the SD card into the Garmin directory I had just created.
4. I removed the SD card from the card reader and inserted it into the Garmin Nuvi and turned it on. I then scrolled to and selected Tools/Settings/Map/Map Info (at the bottom centre of the screen). I saw the following files each with a check box in front of it:
[]Shonky Topo
[]Contours Australia 1.21
[]Tracks4Austgralia 1.20
[]City Navigator Australia NT 2009
Each of the above were ticked. This meant that all were active so I could see the normal
City Navigator Australia NT 2009 with contours superimposed. This looked messy so I opted to uncheck []City Navigator Australia NT 2009 leaving Shonky Topo, Contours Australia 1.21 and Tracks4Austgralia 1.20 selected to give it a test run. I wouldn't recommend that for city use but if you are wanting the Shonky maps thats the selction you have available. It was simply my choice as to what I wanted.
I am unsure of what happens if all the selection boxe are checked(ticked). Ie is the City Navigator going over-ride the Shonky maps when in the city. I'll work that out later.
My problem of loading Shonkymaps onto my Garmin Nuvi 255W seems to have been resolved.
