Thats odd! my Mio just shows tracks in a green area when in road mode whilst off road.
The Map Centre in Parramatta stocks topo on dvd for the whole of NSW going from 1:125 to 1:100 as you get into the outback spots.. it is a fair bit of coin at $250 though.

Have you tried updating the firmware first?

Shonkymaps and contour maps can be used and they are free. Need Mapsource to load and download offroad information

I use shonky on a 760.Not familiar with the265 but with the 760 I have shonky on a sd car and plug it in when I go off road. That way I don’t have to keep changing the setup. You will need mapsource if you are doing any planning on the computer and to communicate with the GPS to transfer data..

If the track is not showing as a line as to where you have been you may have to turn that function on in the unit

hi, we have a garmin 265w aswell and found this same problem, have you tried pressing the + button on the screen while navigating or driving to zoom closer into the map you are on?
as this is what i had to do to view the trail we were driving on.

Shonkymaps are scaled at 250,000:1 it may not zoom passed 1:1 pixel. Need maps like Contour Maps 5m which = 5m:1 pixel so it is a high detailed map. I have similar issues on TTMaps. I now have the 250,000:1 and 25,000:1 which is massive difference.

The missus bought me a nuvi 1390 on the weekend under pretty much the same sort of circumstances.

Some of the resources I have foud useful (and as already mentioned):

MapSource:
GPS Australia - Free and Legit Copy of Mapsource

ShonkyMaps:
Shonkymaps by Shonkylogic

Contours Australia:
Contours Australia Download Page

Whilst searching for a mount that was a little more subtle, I came across this (I have ordered one, and as yet not recomending, it just took me a long time to find something that even looked like what I wanted):
Amazon.com: IG-PSTARA: i.Trek Garmin Nuvi Sticky Mount: Electronics
