Hey there, do you have a GPS unit of sorts yet?

If not your on the right track by posting here, there are plenty of people and lots of different ways to prevent getting lost in the bush in your fourby.

1. if you are really new to GPS, get a book about GPS navigation. there is one that i've seen in a lot of four wheel drive accessories stores that gives good simple info. this way you can choose the type of GPS that suits your needs.

2. you could buy a hema navigator or VMS unit but the both are expensive and can be really complicated to use properly. especially if your not too computer literate. they are good though.

3. all Garmin city navigators and probably some other brands leave whats called a bread crumb trail. so if there is no road on the GPS cuz your out in the bush you will still be shown a track laid by these units indicating where you have been. at least you won't get lost. Garmin also have their new toto maps which i've heard are pretty good and you can always use the free "shonkymaps" from GPS Oz.

4. another option is to do what i did and teach yourself OziExplorer on your PC first the set up a notebook PC in car and run a GPS receiver. it is better than The Hema OR VMS, you can have whatever screen size you want and it is much much cheaper.

just my 2 cents worth

The navman can be unlocked and OziCE loaded. Check the link out http://navmanunlocked.wikispaces.com/Unlock

I have also used the computer option that Big Rig suggested and agree that it works well but you have to be aware of dust ingress into your computer, possible water damage and the constant vibrations can also do irrepairable damage to your hard drive. You also won't get street by street navigation on it.

The beauty about the Hema is that you can just add any map that is in Ozi or Memory Map format, subject to space on your card. If you have Ozi on your computer, you can also convert other maps into Ozi Format for use on your device.
You might think that I am biased towards the Hema - well I am. I've used a number of GPS units (haven't tried the Ebay ones discussed in another thread though) and I find that it's the best one out there. Big screen, easy to use, takes up to a 16 gig card so no swapping memory cards, excellent backup service etc.

Hema Navigator is a the best on the market. With the computer, the best thing is to replace the hard drive with a Solid State Drive (SSD) or use card media. Spinning drive on a rough road is a head crash waiting to happen or media damage.

My boss was never that generous. Anyway, you'll really like the Hema. It's easily the best around.
