Big Rig will be able to answer this as he uses his Nuvi.

I downloaded the map into the memory card via mapsource into my phone. I have to deselect the road maps before I get shonkymaps to work.

I downloaded Shonkymaps for nothing and installed it through mapsource just as Brian has suggested above. You can't run map software from an SD card on the Garmin 760. It is only there for other stuff like music photo's etc. All data is installed on the internal memory.

No idea. They don't even give you instructions. Maybe worth a quick read of the user manual

The SD card can be used in other GPSes and work from there - eg most Garmin handhelds with an SD option i suspect.
I think the DVD gives you flexibility and ease to put it on your computer then use Basecamp/Mapsource to upload mapsets (and routes/tracks/waypoints) onto the unit's GPS storage memory.

This is how i do it.With the nuvi 760 switched off, insert your sd card.Power up the gps, press tools, then settings, then map. When you have the map page press map info,it's bottom centre of the map page. You will then see a description of your street map and also the maps on the sd card, with a box at the start of each description. The street map box will have a tick in it,untick that by pressing it and then tick whichever map you would like to use.I use either shonky or oz toppo in this way with no probs.
Cheers.
