Default Engine reconditioning...

As it suggests, has anyone had any experience with any particular companies, be it good or bad, the recondition motors. i am looking at either reconditioning my 3L V6 in my paj (NG '90) or exchanging it. i have had a look at going down the path of putting a VS 3.8L V6 in it but the guys from mark 4x4 adapters dont have a kit or know anyone whose done it before. so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.....

I aggree with DVDBurner, why change to the 3.8? If no-one has done the conversion before, or a complete kit cannot be obtained, then the change to the 3.8 will be fraught with headaches and end up costing you a fortune if you cannot do a lot of the work yourself...

Once again, you have not told us what your intended use for the vehicle is ... Best keep with original, and recondition your original engine. This will reduce conversion costs. If more power is needed, look at turbo/supercharging or increasing capacity of the original engine when it is being reconditioned !!!

There are a lot of large Engine Reconditioners around that sell "off the shelf" reconditioned engines, but my experience is if you are going to make changes to the engine, go to a smaller reconditioner, they are generally able to give better advice regarding the engine, and are not an "assemby line" operation. These smaller shops will take the extra effort to ensure the engine is "right" for your needs, give a better warranty, and provide better customer service.

A 3.8lt, why not go the 5lt or gen3, im in the middle of fitting a gen3 and manual to our pathy, so im all for the swap path over the rebuilding of small motors and not knowing which reconditioner to trust.

Gidday there, I fitted a rebuilt motor in my NH pajero over 150k ago. I got the motor of Imlachs in melbourne, they are a mitsubishi specialist and i would recommend a call to them for info. They were very professional and easy to deal with. I am a service manager of a holden and nissan dealership and a qualified mechanic and i deal with a lot of different repair centres and imlachs were great, i would use them again.
I researched a commodore motor for my vehicle and i have heard of it being done, but i decided against it because it would have been double the price to fit, and then i would have to have the vehicle engineered for vic reg and then you would also have to find a insurance company that would be happy to insure you for a reasonable price. From my experience keeping original product in your vehicle is the go, (but that is not to say that you can't modify the original components to massively improve performance). cheers john

have you considered changing over to the 3.5 pajero engine. This should be a much simpler installation and you may have less hurdles to jump through with regards to registration. Not sure of the difference in power though but it should be a fair bit better.

if the 3.8 conversion aint possible or been attempted just rebuild the old motor for the purpose u require if it only a weekend car maybe spend a bit of money getting the heads shaved and get a bit more compression and maybe the next size up injectors should gain the 30 - 40 hp mark a nice set of extractors and sports exhaust 2.1/4 id say on a 3 litre and dualys at that to will go sound and run like a charm... if not and it daily driver just get the motor rebuilt back to standard specs..

Default Conversions have been done and i'm about to do it!!!

They are possible, have been done and here is one link to people who are specialists at it.

Mitsubishi Engine Info

I saw one of these conversions done on a Hilux which is a very simular conversion to the Paj.

I am about to do this conversion to my Paj.

I bought a HM reconditioned (short) motor for my VH about 12 years ago. Had it trucked across from their workshop in Melbourne. I was amazed how smooth and powerful it was from the first drive to run it in. It seemed allready run in. It never used oil, and the oil stayed clean from one oil change to the next. Never had any problems with that motor for the next 8 or 9 years. Then had the car defected. ( Out of date LPG tank - 3 months out of date and was fully intending on getting it done - just forgot! )

So now I've still got the car, just in case I want to shift that motor into my next VH that I drive now. Trouble is, I reckon this 'new' VH must have been given a HM motor also. Its so damn good I reckon it will last forever as well!
