Default Land Rover Discovery 3 SE 2006

Land Rover Discovery 3 SE, 2006

Good Points
Nice power from the 4.0L V6 and reasonable economy for a big rig weighing 2.7 tonne. Luxury all the way. Nice driving position. Very capable off road, even with the standard HT tyres. I am very impressed with the ride, on and off the road. Adjustable air bag suspension, lets you lower to get into the parking places others can't.

Bad Points
Black colour. Fuel economy off road. Range overall from 90L tank.

What mods have you done?
None yet, but watch this space. Just about to get everything rolling.

What mods are on the list to do?
Safari snorkel. Steel whinch bar from the UK. Geolander GO12 AT-S tyres. UHF & CB radios. 12000LB whinch. Fit my IPF 9000 Spotties. Dual Battery system. 121L Long Ranger fuel tank.

Why did you buy this vehicle?
Safety for the family on the road, and unrivalled off road ability.
Seven seater, aircon for all 3 rows of seating.

How often do you go offroad?
Had the car only 5 weeks, been offroad twice including Kanagra Walls.

What will your next vehicle be?
Disco 4

Hi mate. What sort of economy are you getting with yours? Also if you get the long range tank done please advise details and how much it costs. Does it replace the standard tank or is it additional etc etc. I am getting 14L/100 in mine but I do a lot of highway/freeway driving. Got under 13 once. Once out of warranty I am going to use different grade oil as I think the 5W / 30 or 40 is too thinn for them. If you are after tyres keep an eye on e-bay. A lot of people (rich ones) change wheels and sell complete alloys and tyres for 500-100 for a set of 5. Bargain. Not sur eif you have 17 or 18". If 17 you have more options but for 18 they are limited to get the exact same size which is what I went for as I did not want to risk even worse economy with bigger tyres. I went for Grabber AT/2's. Bob Jane Penrith sorted them for me. 1750 fitted and balanced for 4.

I'm actually getting approx. the same economy of the 4.6L V8. Mind you though the series 2 Range Rover weighs in at about 2.2 tons some 500 kilos lighter than the disco 3. So i'd say your in about the similar league, also bear in mind the V6 has more power too over the older pushrod V8 to push those extra kilos.

I have the 18's on our SE. I am getting the Yokohama Geolander GO12 A/T-s in a 265/60R18 fitted on Saturday morning, and am getting 5 for $2000 fitted, balanced and wheel alignment. So very happy with that price. (It helps that my mate owns the place)
As far as fuel economy we are not really concerned as we have the Mitsubishi Outlander as the kilometre muncher, 4 cyl. As far as the Disco, on the freeway with only us on board, we get approximately 11.4 L/Per 100k's. But I have free flows cats on ours. I believe we used to get about 13-14 L/Per 100k's on the hwy before fitting them. I know it sounds a lot nicer as well, without being loud. I have never had it below 10L/Per 100k's except when coasting all the way from the top of Mt Victoria!!! LOL

Nice choice

I see you have a nice list of Mods you want to do!
All good but why not a ARB bar? Better than a Pommie one
Also I guess you will need to add a swing away spare wheel carrier if you fit the Long range tank.
Go for the Traxide dual battery kit.
D3
Excellent piece of kit.
Team it up with an Optima Yellow top.

Thanks for the advice, but as far as ARB are concerned they do not do a petrol bar anymore. I don't know why they went to all the trouble to manufacture it, test it and so on, to stop making them anymore. I will have a good look at the Traxride battery kit...
I will do the dual swing away wheel carriers once I put the tank in.
Cheers...

Where did the free flow cats come from and how much? There is a special in this months LRO on installing a hidden winch behind the D3 bumper if you are interested.

Yeah I've seen a few hidden winches, there is quite a bit of room behind the bumper!
Sounds like you are good with a welder if you are going to fabricate one.
I can't understand why ARB have a bull bar to fit the 2.7 TD but not the V6 petrol?
Surely it would fit!
