I have seen all different types of methods to resplice, from just tying it into a knot to some complicated splicing, but one thing you should keep in mind is, if it breaks, you need to replace the whole spool of rope, as it could be damaged too, so what ever method you use, you will need to replace the rope, so just tying a good knot should be fine to get you out of the poo.

Yep! You have took look at whole situation as being like a case of apples - if one is bad then there is every chance there are others bad as well .

In running out a winch rope watch for any signs of damage, nicks or any fraying as this equates to being the weakest link, best method is to use a sheepshank knot to bypass this weak area before using it . If the rope breaks then a fishermans Knot is your best go .

With winchs , something that is overlooked is the shear pin it should be matched with the rating of the rope if not lower - this is designed to be a safety factor .

I don't know about the merits of splicing a winch rope for continued use - I would suspect that it would not be the smartest thing to do , there would always be that question mark over it,. mightn't fail in mild recovery but with a laden vehicle in heavy sand or mud, I would be standing a good distance away .

Instead of splicing back on tself for a hook attachment, you can splice them together using the same tech but each end splices into the other end visaversa.
I hope you get what I mean.
