Which Winch????
Hi, Im looking at putting an electric winch on my Pajero SWB. Iv been looking and basically they range from 4 000lbs to 12 000lbs, So whats the difference(besides price)
Like my car would weigh less than 4000lbs so would something that size be suitable? can a 4000lbs winch dead lift 4000lbs? or is that the mass it can drag? Any help is greatly appreciated. Jordan

Hi Jordan, welcome aboard.
A 8000lb or 9000lb winch would be a suitable size for your rig. 9000lbs = 4082 kilo or 4.2 tonne so you would have plenty of pulling power and a good safety margin.
Winches are rated in line pulling power, the amount of pulling power to pull a car bogged to its floor or more in mud or up a series of high steps can far out weigh the static weight of the vehicle.
Having a winch rated above what you may require means you prob wont work the winch at full capasity which is a good thing, a Warn 8000 pulling 3.63 tonne will use over 400amps pulling at 8 foot per min.
Hope this helps

Hi there,
I have alwayws used the Ox winch from TJM. I just put a 9500lb winch in my patrol and it works great. Price is a bit better than others that I could find but not the cheapest. I bought a wirless remote for the winch also so I can use either a hand control or wirless control. Its a great idea for quick recoverys if ya in the mud!

winch power
hi there just so ya know that a 9500lb winch does not pull 9500lb off the first layer it pulls that off the bottom layer,,the first layer is about 5700 on a ironman then 6500 on the second then 7700 on the 3rd then 9500,,0n the bottom ,,a good way to double ya power is to us a pulley and its a lot easyer on the gear and winch ,, hope this helps you

I also have a ox 9500lb on my Cruiser ... I looked at the Warn ... but the pricing turned me away and the fact that the components are still from china ... I still run steel cable for the fact that the winches have a friction brake located in the drum and the heat generated when wincing out can melt the synthetic rope to the drum ... not my idea of safety ...I can still tie a steel cable if it brakes but is not repairable.....I have spent over 80 grand on my truck and I'm not that comfortable with sticking an ebay winch on my truck ...I looked at the TJM winch for it's back up with the stores being Australia wide as are Warn Through ARB but I found out that TJM now manufacture their own winches in China in a factory they own ... I understand the labour is going overseas but they are a Australian owned company ....

TigerZ11
Hi,
I have installed the tiger this afternoon, :P
Quite impressed with the price and the speed!
Everything is made in china now, but I guess time will be the ultimate test, if you see me back here after I have been to the Cape in September complaining about a broken winch, I guess macca17 and bosshog01 were right :P

I'm an electrical fitter & part of my job is repair & overhaul of motors & gearboxes etc. I have now overhauled a few winches for mates & have stripped down 2 warn xd9000 & 2 Chinese no name brand winches now. Interestingly both warn winches couldn't be saved as the magnets rusted so severely that the field coils were damages & were shorting down to earth requiring a new motor. The gearbox of one of the warns was totally seized with rust On the other warn both motor mounting bolts were rusted into the end frame & snapped when being undone. The chinese winches were in a reasonable state & have rubber gaskets to stop some of the water getting in & seems to work OK as both winches are still in service.
I haven't seen a large difference in quality between the warns & chinese winches & consider the weatherproofing on the cheapies was the saving grace. I have certainly seen enough to make my decision to go for 3 cheap winches rather than 1 expensive winch. Winch repair places often recommend installing a breather to the motor & some recommend an air supply to the breather as well.
The best maintenance is to run out the wire occasionally & rewind it to keep everything moving & especially after dipping it in river crossings to warm it up & dry out the water.
Cheers
Bri

i few of my mates have the winches from ALDI... i laughed at them when they first bought them-about 2 years ago.... now whos laughing? they are. none of them have had any problems at all and always get themselves in situations that the winches are needed to pull them over rock steps higher than their bonnets.. they have well used their winches with no probs.. now nearly everyone i know has ALDI winches..
i rate them but dont own 1
