Default Axle Bearing Issues

Hi All,

I have a 96 NJ Pajero 3.5 Litre Petrol LWB Auto.

Recently, there has been some vibration from the front end. This has turned out to be a bearing that sits inside the axle housing just inside the flange where the CV assembly bolts on.

Inside this housing is an inner shaft. Both ends of this inner shaft are supported by a bearing, and it is one of these that has collapsed.

I have removed the outer housing between the front diff on the drivers side and where it attaches to a plate ready for the CV to mount on the other side and head to the wheel.

Problem is, I cannot get the inner shaft and end flange out of the outer housing to even determine what type of bearing I need.

I have attached some pics.

Looking at the first picture below, the four bolts you see on the left are what the CV assembly attaches to. The right had side of the picture is what attaches to the diff.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I am off the road until I get this fixed.

I can put up more pics if needed.

If anyone knows of a Mitsubishi mechanic or anyone who has replaced this bearing before, more that willing to pay for them to come out and help / fix.

Thanks

Hi Davidman.
My guess would be that you might have to press the axle out.
Alternatively the pajero forums were very informative when i had a jero.
Cheers Rob.

Yes mate you will need to press the stub axle out of the housing. Both the bearing and the shaft come out as one unit then seperated.

David could you post up a picture of the last shot but only "end on" and close up.

I'd like to see how the bearing and the splines fit together.

Cheers

Justin

Hi Justin

The shaft and inner axle are at an engineers in Dandenong at the moment, where the collapsed one is being replaced, hopefully. I had to get a replacement bearing in from Mitsubishi in Adelaide.

I will take some pics and post when I get it back.

David

Latest Update

Housing and shaft were at the engineers. Started with a 20 tonne press.....nothing.

Modified the press setup so that two 20 tonne presses could be used, one to pull from each direction......40 tonne in total...........nope, the shaft was not going to come out. Oh well, next option, the wreckers.

Finally found a wrecker that was willing to pull an inner axle and shaft off the diff etc of a Pajero, he said it only took him two hours and when I was chatting to him on picking it up, there were more than a few swear words.

Noticed on the housing that it said NH Pajero. Mine is an NJ. I raised this with him before I paid, and was assured that they were identical. I did some initial measurements and all looked good.

Got it home, put it all where it was meant to go, attached the vacuum lines and everything else, even filled the diff up with oil. All looking good. Only a couple of mm to slide the housing into the diff to match with the alignment pins and holes......................Not going to go..................bugger.

Pulled the thing out again, removed the dog clutch type of bearing and the other vacuum attachments and what do I notice, the old bearing is one with balls and not tapered, the new one is with pins and is tapered.................bugger again.

Oh well, nothing left to do but hit the local bottle shop, sit back, watch the ALF footy show and wait for the wreckers to open in the morning ( better work out who I can borrow a car from first ). It's going to be fun there tomorrow, especially with the swearing that went on today. Maybe I will learn some new words, that's going to be the only upside to this whole saga which started last Friday.

Next update tomorrow..................hopefully a happy ending.

My Diary

Friday 4th June 2010

Got to the wreckers this morning at 8:00 AM with the original axle and the 'new' wrong axle ready to learn a few more words.

Anyway, after sitting out the front in the car on Frankston Dandenong Road until just after 9:00 AM when they opened , I finally got back in. Explained the situation to the guy down there and he said, " Yeah it will be different, the one I gave you yesterday is from a 3.0 Litre 96 NJ, that's what you wanted wasn't it"

I have a 3.5 Litre, I said, politely and calmly

Yeah I got one of those, but it is still attached to the car, do you mind waiting a while.

No, why would I mind waiting, the cars only been off the road since last Friday, why not lets see if we can make it two weeks instead of one

Back at home now, with the correct replacement part and about to spend the next half a day replacing it all.

More diary entries later and hopefully the mad faces will all be happy faces by then
