Default GU stinks!!!

Everytime the missus puts the air con(fan) on, a bad odour comes out of the vents. I presume something has died some where in there. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the smell? Also, is there a filter on the air con that can be removed to inspect? The missus doesn't like to drive with the window down as it messes up her hair.

I thought about that. But the Patrol has been sitting in the shed for the last couple of days. Only found the smell today as she took it to work.

A filter can be bought and installed somewhere under the glovebox, but I don't think there is one standard.
Maybe spray a bit of Glen 20 or vanilla fridge wipe around, and run the air-con flat out for a bit to clear it?

There is a cabin aircon pollen filter on pasanger side under the dash. Big black box and filter is held in place by a clip. In Australia Patrol doesn't get filter as standard,so I don't know if you have it or not.

Have a look at this webpage GU Patrol Reference Document and look at Page 65

Cheers!

Some new model Patrols have a Microbe style cartridge pollen filter located in the airbox under the dash, not all models have it like DX but seem to remember some do.
When these clog up you can get some foul smells, Also I have seen several of these in Murano's etc that have been eaten by mice trying to find a way out with the dead rodent found in the area.
Most dealerships have a fog style machine that they put in the car and run the air-co on recirculate for 20 min or so with an odour neutralizer- they work pretty well.
Maybe try that first and if the smell returns have the filter checked.

Cheers

Many moons ago when I spanered we had something like this.

Check your air conditioning drain tube is clear.
The smell is somthing living in the water in the heater box or on the evaperater.
Does it only happen when the A/C is on? what about the heater?
There was a spray for fixing/killing the problem.
The Glen 20 idea may work for you.

The drain maybe blocked and old water is sitting there. I use a cable tie and clear the tube.
