Need a New Career
hey guys
a lot of you would remember from a few weeks ago me wanting to learn some mechanics.
This thread is an extention of that.
Basically i spent all my 20s doing "artistic" things like gig, tour, photography, make short films etc with just jobs that paid enough to survive. Well being 32 turning 33 its time for a career. Will still do all that BUT it will be secondary to work. Anyway, atm i am very interested in mechanics, being that my favourite hobby away from music is my 4x4.
Ofcourse as you would know i know NOTHING so i would be starting at the bottom working my way up but what i want to know is would i have a chance doing this or would garages only want to employ teenagers, who would know more than me anyway?
Please dont take this thread as a joke im serious. Have gone through quite a traumatic 12 months and starting to come out the other side... hopefully better for it. But now i see i need to decide what i want to do.
I can get work as retail/sales manager/2ic pretty easily BUT ....well pretty dull.
Anyway, if any of you have any info or suggestion/view points please let me know here or PM me
Cheers
Aaron

Aaron my niece used to go and work voluntarily for a couple of days and if they were satisfied with her they could choose to employ her, got her a few jobs and along the way she picked up some general knowledge and also some hands on experience too. Good luck with your Quest.

more my experience is in retail/sales/retail management. Its ok, if its in an area i luv ie music or photography etc BUT its still not very rewarding. Never really cared as i saw it as a means to an end, which was to buy me more musical and photographic gear. Now tho, being engaged, settling down that side is not the major force in my life and going through a tough time last year made me think.
Im not 100% certain what i want to do but i know whatever i choose i want to stick with it for the long run. Right now 4x4ing is my luv and passion and for the first time in my life i am really interested in cars, altho mainly the 4x4 type so i thought this might be the way to go. I know i would have to be somewhere where they are cool with my age and lack of knowledge, if they were tho i would work my ass off to get up to speed.
Anyway, i was just putting it out there to see what opinions you guys had

Hey there Aaron lol
yeah i have done real estate. Was on the gold coast... no offence to you, if you are in it, but the people i worked with were the biggest w@nkers known to man. Very obsessed by sales, would do anything including lie to peoples face to get a sale. Thats not me. Been a salesman for almost 15 years and if you came to me wanting a particular drum kit that didnt suit your style i would tell you, even if that lost me the sale. But my honesty would make you a long term customer of mine. ANyway, yeah i think my blood is not cold enough for the real estate world im afraid lol

The only drawback, is a financial one. Can you survive on a first year apprentice's wage?

Mature apprentice's these days normally get paid TA wages to start with.
It's hard to find a job as a mature aged apprentice these days I know we will never put another one on. We have done it twice and regetted it both times.
Can I suggest if you do receive a chance cop the sh!t the tradies had to do it they will expect you to do the same. All the crappy jobs are just part of doing your time and most tradies have been there done that.
Cheers

you mean the mature ones you hired didnt want to do the "crappy" jobs?
I mean i havent been an apprentice before but every new job you have to take shit and do the crap stuff no one wants to do. I expect that, the only thing i wont tolerate is when it crosses the line and is disrespectful..if its part of the job i will do it all day long thats no problem at all.
I can take a joke too... so if im being laughed at fine lol no problem. Been there done that.
Even non tradie jobs have that, the last job i was manager of buys and loans in the Valley here in brissie. Lots of crap jobs which usually consist of serviing transexuals, junkies, prostitutes, homeless etc
The long term people would make me serve them, even tho i was the boss, to see if i could take it or not otherwise they wouldnt respect me
I understand that mentality and i would do the same back to others..

Thats it. Sometimes they are meanial tasks but still have to be done. I manage a rather large organisation every so often I will go and do some of the meanial tasks. I think they are easy and it also lets me get a feel for whats happening out on the floor.
