Another hour away gets you into some real 4WD country. From the Kiewa valley, a good one is turn off at Reids lane from the Kiewa Valley Highway, which leads you on to the Redbank track ,this takes you up to the Eskdale Spur track which goes up to the summit of Mt. Emu, this is where the kamikaze types launch themselves off in hangliders to glide over the Kiewa valley- the Redbank track up to to Eskdale spur track is definitely lowrange work but is in surprisingly good order as there hasnt been any serious rain for a couple of years, the main inpediment is that the blackberries encroach onto the track a bit at times- obviously the bulldozer hasn't been in for a while.
In the Buffalo Valley you have a few choices, you can go over Goldies Spur track to the Buckland Valley and if you continue up the Buckland a bit there is a track which takes you up to just before Mt.St. Bernard near Hotham.
The other choice from the Buffalo Valley is to go into the Wonnongatta Valley from the northern end on the East track which flows onto Riley's track. Rileys is a medium track, you only have to suss out which way to negotiate the valley side bank of the first crossing of the Wonnangatta River, you might wet your hubs, but the far bank gets chopped up a bit at times.
A challenge is from Aberfeldy to lake Cobbler, went through there a couple of years ago and there was a bit of rock hopping and some loose stuff in places, if the dozer has been through, you can rate it medium.
There are plenty of tracks to explore just on from Yack in the Kiewa, you are after all near to the North East , God's own country, I am biased, I grew up in the Keiwa and Buckland Valleys. Check them out with any local 4WD club, the Albury-Wodonga mob aren't a bad bunch.
