Default Bushnuts Davies Plain Muster- EASTER 2010

If you are interested in coming along, PM or post it on the thread, the party will be limited to 8 vehicles >

For the Thursday night if coming in from the Gippsland end I would suggest coming in from Omeo ( last chance for FUEL )- Benambra . If you are not into just off the road camping there are a couple of Caravan/ camping parks at Omeo and for those coming via Wodonga - Corryong if you are not into just off the road camping there are a couple of Caravan/ camping parks at Corryong (last chance for FUEL ), there is also a good caravan park at Colac-Colac . which is at that end of the Nariel Valley.

I would propose that the trip commences near to the top of the Nariel Valley at the Scrubby Creek Track 36 degrees25'36.98"S, 147 degrees50'24.39"E. here you will have to realize that you are on sacred ground, I once lived here, the old House was burnt down a long time ago, my Auntie Barb was the Upper Nariel telephone exchange operator, across the road there are houses where the farms dairy shed used to be .

Will plot a trek over the next few weeks, whilst I spent part of my youth up in this neck of the woods, things do change, so I will refer to DSE and Parks as to current track conditions etc . Of recent times I have come up from Corryong through the Thowgla valley to Mt Pinnibar- Tom Groggin. I am interested in having a wander along what is listed incorrectly as Mrs. Ceres Spur Track on some maps - It is actually Mrs. Szerys Spur track after my Auntie Barbara, bit of a hippy from the 50's before the term was coined , she was definitely ahead of her time and she had pushed the track through in the 60's , I think it was . Auntie Barb is still alive in her 80's and drives a Pajero but nowadays lives over near Khancoban .

To those who haven't travelled up in this area before, it really is incredible country but you must be prepared for all weather conditions . A few years ago at Easter time ago we were up there and had unbelievable rain at Davies Plain hut and a slight sprinkle of snow another 50 metres in elevation yet when we left Corryong it was a mild Autumn Day .

The carrying of Recovery gear will be essential and food and supplies for 3 Nights 4 Days, there will be no shops after Benambra or Corryong .

Will post the trip notes up as soon as I have checked out what is open etc .

I guess the first thing is a list of vehicles coming so
here goes

Bushnut (1)
Greyghost (4)
Donx (2)

Default Davies Plain Trip

Hey Bushnut, a mate and I are heading off up that way on the long weekend (march 6th, 7th, 8th). We are heading up from the Bainsdale end through to Omeo - Benambra and on. We are heading up to find the source of the murray around Cowombat Flat, check out McHardies Flat (The Poplars) and generally check out the Huts and camping in the area. Is this where you are heading to aswell? I've never been to this area before, have you? We are leaving Saturday morning.

In the area but starting point will be more to the NNE aproximately 2/3 of the way between Benambra and Corryong Whereas you are heading a rough NWW to the start of the Murray. Always get up to date info from Parks and I think Towong Shire has a very good map of the area and Up to date info of track conditions of the area

In my youth, in my bushwalking days, I have stood at the source of the Murray with one foot on one bank and the other one on the other, bit of walk in, take good gear in and food just in case the weather turns against you . Rooftop maps have a good one for the area . We are heading up there for the Easter, you could do it in 3 but it will be a bit rushed . The long weekend coming up we The Gippsland crew , 8 vehicles are heading up through Huggetts crossing-the Pinnacles-Billy Goats Track- Talbotville- Wonnagatta Valley out Zeka spur And into the Butcher Country .

Yep, the quota was filled within minutes for the labour day one!!
G'day Shiny, you should put up a pic or two of your ride, and let us know the mods etc, camp set-up and
how much 4bying you've done.
No need to be shy around here, some of us are well travelled, some complete newbies, (and even
novices can have great ideas and set-ups!)

Jok
