Fantastic info and pictures. we are heading south to the high country on Monday and will be spending six days in the area. any advice? we are not likely to hit snow are we? being northern NSW folk we fear snow.

I guess my advice is be prepared for anything, snow included. Have good maps, a detailed plan of which tracks you plan to take and leave a copy of plans behnd with someone. Don't forget to take them with you too. Call up the local Parks guys who should be able to give you up to date info on the tracks. Let someone know of your route before you head off. Use Google Earth if you like. Try to camp down low close to a river, its warmer and more sheltered than 1200m above sea level. Have enough food/water to be self sufficient for a few days more than your plan. With enough rain, you can get stuck on the most simple of tracks. Take a friend with you. ie another vehicle.
We altered our plan as we would not have had enough time to take the original route through Butcher Country.
Do you have some sort of route plan? Get one! Eyes and ears always open.
PM me if you want more details.
Nick

Thanks sound advice too, we do have a good map and a GPS with roads & tracks, what we don't have is snow chains. we will continue to monitor the weather but we can feel our plans slipping away as the rivers rise and the weather moves in. I suspect rather then crossing the mountains we will only be venturing up into them and retreating later. I's a bit of a bum as we have been planing the trip since last September.
But they will still be there next year i guess. I have the Forestry numbers and intend checking for road closures prior to entery the area. we were going from Corryong to Omeo via the tom grogin track. not sure if it will be open in a weeks time.

I'm glued to BOM web site watching the weather unfold, dam good for the skiers but not so "hot" for us campers.

Great report Nick.
Photo's are impressive.
Can't wait to get the new truck so I'm more prepared to tackle these tracks when conditions are less than perfect.
When the new wheels arrive I will be hounding you to tag along on similar trips in the future.
Tony.

Unless they are closed already, I don't think you will get any track closures. The conditions will and have changed since last week. Snow on the hills today and cccold and rain all week. Unless your vehicle is really well equipped and have a well equipped buddy with you, I would stay at home and go later. If you do still go, stay on the main tracks. If you are going to do Blue Rag, there WILL be snow up there as it is as high as the rest of the hills around. I am not sure that snow chains are a must, but you could certainly do with a good set of MT tyres.
Where do you plan to go? Which tracks? You do have a plan don't you?
Nick
