Default 3rd Annual Vic gathering - Skipworth Reserve (ex Granny's Flat trip)

.
Annual Victorian Gathering – Skipworth Reserve - November 2010

Due to numbers exceeding the capacity of the original location at Grannys Flat Campground, we have had to change the location. This has not changed by much, in fact kilometre distance is almost identical and we are still meeting up approximately 7 kilometres out of Jamieson.

UHF 27 will be the general channel for communication. This will be monitored at the campsite.

Upon arrival, please attend at the Registration Tent where you can collect your name tag/s and check the notice board. If you haven't completed a Registration From, you will have an opportunity to do this here.

Where

Skipworth Reserve is a large camping area situated on the Goulburn River approximately half way between Jamieson and Kevington on the Mansfield – Woods Point Road. Looking at the map, you will find the reserve a couple of inches directly below Jamieson. For detailed directions, please see the attachments.

When

Thursday 18th November 2010 to Monday 22nd November 2010
Some may stay on longer.

Camping Available

Skipworth Reserve caters for two styles of camping. Firstly, you have the open areas where you can set up caravan, camper or tent and be reasonably close to toilets and other communal facilities. Secondly, a large area of the campsite is 'bush' based, with smaller tracks through the forest with some small clearings for tents / campers and an open fire. The largest of these 'bush' camping areas would only accommodate maybe a camper, a tent, two vehicles and an open fire. There are a number of these areas, but they are a considerable walk back to the communal open camping area. There is one toilet block in the bush area with two toilets in it. Depending on where you set up, this could still be a decent walk.

Please try to stick to the marked tracks in the campsite as much as possible. If this is not possible, please only travel slowly and in 2WD.
We want to leave the campsite in a better condition than we found it.

Warnings

- The Goulburn River runs the length of the camp and care needs to be taken with children.
- There are a number of shafts not too far from the campsite. Please be careful when walking through the bush.
- The DSE has warned that camping under trees can be dangerous due to falling limbs. Please take care.
- The Mansfield Woods Point Road runs alongside the campsite, and although not usually busy, care needs to be taken.

Facilities

- Accessible to all vehicles, caravans, campers, 2 wheel drives, 4 wheel drives etc. The reserve is on a bitumen road.
- Camper trailer friendly
- Several pit toilets in various toilet blocks ( 6 female and 4 male in total )
- No dogs allowed…..regardless!
- Water is available for cleaning, showering, portable toilets etc from the Goulburn River (not suitable for drinking).
- The location has numerous firepits (9), other fireplaces and several sets of tables and benches (8)
- There is no power on site, so you will need to be self sufficient in this regard
- Closest Diesel, Unleaded and Premium Unleaded is at Jamieson between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Closest LP gas is at Mansfield which is 42.3 kilometres along fully sealed roads from the campsite.

What you need to Bring

- Your own recovery equipment. (Must be rated)
- All required camping equipment
- All food and cooking / drinking water
- UHF or other radio communication for use when driving
- Anything else to be self sufficient for the duration of your stay.

All rubbish must be taken out with you. There are no rubbish bins.
Please do not dispose of metal containers, glass bottles or plastic in campfires. It does not break down completely and is still considered littering.
Remember, if you can carry it in, you can carry it out, it is not that hard.
We would also encourage picking up any rubbish you come across.
We want to leave the site in a cleaner state than we find it.

Local Area Attractions

- Jamieson Pub is 7 kilometres away and offers a great atmosphere, food and drinks in front of an open fire
- Jamieson Brewery is 9 kilometres away; don’t need to say too much more about a brewery.
- There is a general store in Jamieson for the essentials. Open most days between 9:00AM and 5:00PM but varies on weekends
- Trout fishing is apparently good in the the various rivers including the Goulburn, Howqua and Jamieson.
- The Kevington Pub is approximately 5 kilometres away. Great meals, open fire, pool table, juke box....don't need to say much more

4X4 Earth Events

- Several 4WD runs ranging from beginner and easy through intermediate to hard.
- There are several huts in the area and trips will be occurring to many of these
- A run to the iconic Craig’s Hut will also be happening and if you haven't been there, it is well worth a visit.
- A Geocaching event will be taking place over the gathering for anyone interested.
- A camp oven cook off will be taking place on the Saturday night.

Jamieson has it's own external web site and it is well worth a look. Welcome to Jamieson

- Medical information should also be given. This is voluntary. It is in your best interest if you have a medical condition.

Just hope everyone appreciates the work that has gone into organising this event & everyone who said they will show does so. i would like to come for at least one night, but as I cant gaurantee it 100% due to work, I will have to leave it till closer to the date if that is acceptable.

Hi guys.
I'm still in; should be there late Thursday plus 4 others. 3 non 4x4ers (they'll go do tourist stuff) and 1 jockey in my car.

On a side note, being a newbie, I currently have limited recovery gear. Recovery points front & rear, snatch strap & a hand puller (a very poor winch substitute).
Is that going to be a problem?
I've just yesterday had a mount fabricated for a winch but don't think the budget will allow me to purchase one before Skipworth.
Suggestions as to what I must have please?

Cheers,
Ruffy

Here is a pic of the main entrance. This is probably as narrow as the road gets. There is no dirt, bitumen all the way. Easy drive with a van.

Default Newbie Family from Melbourne!

Hi, this trip sounds awesome and we would love to come along. 2 Adults and 1 chid (aged 10). Is this trip suitable for in-experienced 4wders, the most that we would have done by then is a 4wd Training Course. Cheers Pina, Peter and Jonathan

G'day Pina, Peter and Jonathan.

By all means come along. It will be a great chance to meet what is turning out to be a huge number of 4x4 Earth forum members. As WILDTI (Elise) said in her last post to you, there will be trips of every level occurring. Many people probably wont even end up leaving the campsite, apart from going to one of the two local pubs ( Jamieson and Kevington ) or maybe to visit the Jamieson Brewery. The furthest of these three is less than 10 klm away.

Also, no dramas with your 10 year old. We will have people there of all ages. A couple of our forum members are due to have babies in the next week or so, and they will probably be attending. All the way through to some retirees who just want to kick back and relax.

There will be activities for the kids too, ranging from colouring competitions through to more advanced / older stuff too. Also geocaching events which the kids can get involved in with their parents.

When you do decide to come along, can you please email a registration form ( attached at the bottom of the first post advising of the trip ) through to Nick ( email on the form ) and maybe put a post on here confirming. We can then add your arrival day and 'rego form received ' to the main post.

By the way, welcome to the site and enjoy.

Thanks

David
