Go the Maxxis Bighorns. I run the MTZ's & have been a little dissapointed in them... For a mud tyre the MTZ's 'on road behaviour' is very good in both wet & dry conditions, but I cant say the same when 'off road'...

Rocks - Terrible, ripped off quite a few chunks, grip is average compared to MTR's
Clay type surface - Average at best, no lateral grip & slip & slide everywhere.
Normal mud; re bog hole/thick stuff. - Not bad but not as good as I was led to believe.
Mileage.- Dont care about that, but if I get 40k I will be happy. Still have 7mm of tread
after 20 odd k but well past their best.

My mate Simon has the Bighorns on his Patrol. Outperform the MTZ's everywhere except 'on road'

My next set of tyres will be the KM2's but I believe some new Bighorns are coming that have reasonably aggressive 'sidebiters'.

Another 2cents worth . If you can get hold of a 2nd set of rims & tyres (roadies) . Mud tyres no matter what brand are to expensive to run around on the road all day . I've been there done that & spent to much coin . Doesn't take to long to change your wheels & helps with fuel economy IMPO.
There are quite a few guys in my 4by club that run the BigHorns & are very happy with them . They seem to be good value for money , i'll contemplate them when my Coopers wear out . At the mo i'm happy with my Cooper STT's

Cheers Artie

I have just gone through making the same decision and after much discussion have gone with the bighorns on a second set of wheels.

I don't think it would matter what tyres you have on up in the high country. I was up there for 3 days with about 30hs of driving on bfg T/As and tore them apart. That's the nature of the tracks up there. When I go back up there i think I will try to find a cheap second hand set to destroy.

I have just had Bighorns put on. don't know how long they will last. They seem to handle the tracks and road well. Not too much road noise. For the price if the give me 40-50000kms I will be happy.

I would not buy a set of the MTZ's they are s@!t, constantly tearing the sidewalls, if i had a doller for every MTZ with a torn sidewall I could buy a set of Bighorns.
Not only that but they are not hat great offroad, I just got back from Levuka, I run 35" Trepadors on my patrol and a mate had 35"MTZ's on his, his 4b had more power, lift and locked and i went everywhere he went and 90% off the time i did it allot easyer.
I am very happy with the Treps they are outstanding on the road (wet or dry)and outstanding offroad,
Cant comment on the bigies as i have never had them, but I never hear any bad comments.

Cheers

Make sure you rotate them pretty regulary or they will start to howl.

Great tyre love them off road and good value for money. It is hard to measure how many miles you get from a set of tyres that are used for both on & off road - off road can really take a toll on tyres some days.

I am just about to get another set myself. Contenplating about MTZ and bighorns. Funny about the Procomp MT a few years ago at the outback challenge the winner drove up there on them and competed and won. I have at the moment procomp extremes and have worn really well, I recon I am coming up to 80-90K on them and they are about 40%. They dont work to well in reverse tho. Thinking now I might stick with pro comp but go down to the MTs. I recon though I will be paying about $350 each for the 35's. OUCH!!!

I'd say MT MTZ's, I've had a very good 120,000KM+ experaince with them + 20-30K of tread left. (35" tyre)

Big horns are good... but not as aggressive vursing the MTZ's, I'm not a fan of Big horns at all.

I upgraded to BFG KM2's (35" Tyre). I took it offroad probably twice and I did feel the extra grip, felt much better than MTZ's, probably because it was new. I remember hitting one particular track at Ormeau (Tower of Terror) that my patrol struggle to get up on with MTZ's on, the BFG KM2 improved my patrols traction heaps, less slipping on rocks etc, and I got up the hill climb with only the Front locker engaged.

Have a think about BFG KM2, you won't go wrong .
Good luck,

OK so looks as tho I will be going the MT's. I know the BF's are good but how are they for longevity? And what do they cost?
