Goolwa Beach
About the Track
Track Description

A great beach run along Sir Richard Peninsula.  Watch the tide though! It can be generaly accessed 24/7 but may be closed at any time because of conditions.  The mouth access is currently open (as at 20/12/2008)  but can also be closed at any stage.  There is a sign at the beach access track that shows the mouth access status.

The access track from Beach Rd. onto the beach is a of moderate difficulty because of soft churned up sand, so caution and low tyre pressure is recomended.  The beach drive itself is easy but becomes moderate to hard down near the Murray Mouth end due to very soft and churned up sand.

I do sugest you have your own recovery gear and compressor with you.  Get stuck here and not only will you be chastised, it will cost you if you need to use a recovery service if no one else is arround or willing to help. Overall I have rated this as an easy drive.

Hell, today (20/12/2008) there was a tiny Mazda 121 2WD driving happily along the beach, granted he did have a friend with a Land Cruiser. :D :D :DI have done this in a friends small Daihatsu Terios at night in the past and our Kia Sportage handled it superbly.A great way to put your sand driving skills to the test.

Update by demomax 10/4/2012: the sand is pretty hard at the moment and there is no difficulties at all getting to the mouth. Great for just having some fun.

54402 Very easy run, aired down to about 18 psi all round, not many others seemed to worry about letting down and were running highway pressures. I had no issues with traction but noticed they were struggling a bit. Great introduction to beach driving! Mitsubishi Pajero Dec 7, 2014

5887 Very soft before and after the deviation over the washout. Took 2 GU Patrols & KJ Cherokee on 20psi pressures. Awesome drive and first beach experience. ***Nobody else was airing down and plenty of 4bys at the mouth regardless of sign restrictions*** Nissan Patrol Apr 7, 2012

26651 I go down that way all the time. sometimes can get choppy almost the whole way along after the first KM. The entrance is always rutted and chopped up with loads of loose sand. A lot of fun though. Just to make it easier you may want to drop the pressures to 20. Toyota Landcruiser Mar 26, 2012

24624 Nice easy 10km drive along hard sandy beach. Entry/Exit to beach is soft rutted sand as is near the end of drive just before Murray Mouth where you need to deviate a little off to the left over a rocky plateau that has sand-hill like up to and down from the track. Murray Mouth area too is softish sand. Used Auto 4wd mode plus "Lock" for soft sand with ESP off. Tires only down to 30psi front and 27psi rear. Nissan Xtrail Dec 27, 2011

7017 I drive this beach a number of times a year and it can be different each time - especially the mouth. street pressures are ok unless it's during the holiday season, then the beach can get fairly chopped up, still 25psi is fine. can be some washed gully's that can surprise if not careful, 40 - 50kph is a good speed to keep to. have seen a Subaru outback at the mouth with the beach chopped so anything is possible. Nissan Navara Dec 27, 2010
16281 Nice trip along the beach from Goolwa to the mouth, a nice day cockling. Had to watch the sea ruts though, some were surprisingly sharp and deep. Holden Rodeo Nov 23, 2010
12619 Went just after high tide, churned up near the top. had to rescue a Pajero who didn't have 4WD. Nice drive. Nissan Patrol Oct 17, 2010
13296 soft churned sand along high tide mark, firm on beach between high and low tide. very soft churned sand at murray mouth. was a good run for my first. great around sunrise.. Nissan Pathfinder Oct 9, 2010

10331 easy drive, hard sand most the way apart from the mouth... did it in high way pressure 40psi, would let tyres down if i go again. pulled out a awd ford territory stuck at mouth Mitsubishi Pajero May 4, 2010
10613 Have been down to the mouth many times. Just before the mouth there is a soft sand section which requires going over the top rather than the beach - particularly at high tide. Usually drop rgw PSI down to 20 though we have done it at standard pressure without any issues. Warning on travelling through the sandhills - the rangers patrol for vehicles travelling through the back sandhills - there are no signs but there is a fine for travelling there in a vehicle - but it is OK by foot go figure? Mitsubishi Delica Mar 27, 2010
1429 In Summer, the Goolwa entrance gets a fair hammering and can be tough for 'softroaders' and fourbies with trailers. In big surf conditions watch out for 'sweeper' waves that come much further up the beach. Mitsubishi Challenger Feb 4, 2010

2732 Great beach to drive on wide flat hard sand once past the entrance, witch was very chopped up and rutted. Many vehicles parked on the beach as people collecting Goolwa cockles. At about the eight Klm mark you can leave the beach and head two Klms across some very soft sand and park right at the mouth of the Murray River. Tyres can be reinflated at the servo. about two - three Klms from the entrance to the beach at Goolwa. Toyota Prado Jan 18, 2009
